What is Surface Preparation - Introduction

  • SURFACE PREPARATION is method of physical and/or chemical pretreatments to enhance the adhesive strength of a surface to be treated/coated.

    Chemical Cleaning:
    • Vapor degreasing
    • Acid pickling
    • Ultrasonic cleaning
    Heating:
    • Pre-heating substrate upto 315º C.
    Rough Threading:
    • Only possible for cylindrical parts
    • Used for metallic coating for high coating thickness
    • Not suitable for hard coating
  • What is Surface Preparation

Abrasive BlastingMost Suitable process prior to thermal spray coating

ABRASIVE BLASTING:
  • Abrasive Blasting is the operation of forcibly propelling a stream of abrasive material against a surface under high pressure to generate required anchor pattern on the surface.

  • Abrasive Blasting
  • Traditionally abrasive blasting has been considered a "low tech" process generally called sand blasting. Today, however, abrasive blast cleaning is a vital process used not only to remove rust, but to prepare surfaces for high performance coatings or to treat final products to give them the luster and surface texture desired by the consumer.

  • Traditionally abrasive blasting
NEED OF BLASTING:
  • To provide compressive surface stress
  • To increase bond surface area
  • To get a virgin surface
  • To generate anchor pattern for getting good bond with coating material

TYPES OF BLASTING PROCESSES:
Surface Preparation Rating:
  • SA 1 Light Blast Cleaning
  • SA 2 Thorough Blast Cleaning
  • SA 2 ½ Very Thorough Blast Cleaning
  • SA 3 Blast Cleaning to visually clean

Optimum Coatings Performance Achieved with SA 2 ½ surface finish
